Canadian Nurses Association (CNA)
Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL)
St John's, Newfoundland
Oct 13 -14, 2006

Clinical nurses, nurse educators, nurse managers and student nurses participated in a Wall Workshop titled: Globalization: it's impact on health systems and nursing.  First, they created a Wall of trends in Nursing and Health Systems (2 main stones) in Newfoundland-Labrador and Canada. After looking at the impact these trends have on home, community, workplace and association, they considered what is promoting and limiting equity. Then a second banner was posted beside the Wall which included a nurse holding up a globe, and a bridge with nurses walking from the globe to the Canadian Wall representing the global migration of nurses.  Participants were asked why nurses are migrating which led to a discussion of structural adjustment policies, debt, insufficient aid from richer countries to poorer countries and WTO trade agreements.  Participants identified and posted in the globe, differences and similarities between nurses in different parts of the world.  Current actions promoting greater equity in health systems and nursing were written on the leaves that were posted on both the Canadian Wall and the global banner.  These informed the actions that participants named and posted on the Wall.
